GST Rates in India (Current 4-Slab Structure)
Following the GST 2.0 reforms effective 22 September 2025, India retired the 12% and 28% slabs to eliminate classification disputes. The current indirect tax structure operates on four primary rate slabs:
| Rate | Slab Name | Illustrative Items & Services | GST on ₹1,000 | Total Amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | Nil / Exempt | Basic food items, fresh agricultural produce, unbranded grains, books, salt, and milk | ₹0 | ₹1,000 |
| 5% | Low Tax Tier | Packaged food items, apparel under threshold, tea, spices, life-saving medicines & economy travel | ₹50 | ₹1,050 |
| 18% | Standard Slab | Commonly applicable rate for many services and specified goods where applicable (IT, telecoms, electronics, restaurants) | ₹180 | ₹1,180 |
| 40% | Unified Luxury & Sin Slab | Luxury motor vehicles, motorcycles, aerated beverages & tobacco (consolidating former 28% + separate cess under GST 2.0) | ₹400 | ₹1,400 |
• Special Rates & Unified 40% Slab: Specific commodities carry notified rates, such as 3% for gold, silver, and precious jewellery, and 0.25% for rough diamonds. Under the simplified GST 2.0 reforms, specified luxury and demerit goods (such as aerated beverages, tobacco, pan masala, and high-end vehicles) are now consolidated under the 40% rate slab, replacing the former 28% plus separate Compensation Cess structure.
• Statutory Framework: The 40% rate also corresponds to the maximum statutory rate ceiling permitted under Section 9(1) of the CGST Act (up to 20% CGST + 20% SGST), reflecting India's streamlined 4-slab structure (0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%).
Disclaimer: Statutory GST rates are strictly classification-dependent based on the item's HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code. Always verify notified rates on official government portals (gst.gov.in / cbic.gov.in).

GST Calculation Formula & Rules
The exact arithmetic implemented in this calculator for exclusive and inclusive invoice billing.
Used when quotation or contracted fees do not include taxes. GST is added on top of the taxable base.
GST Amount = Base Value × (GST Rate / 100)
Gross Total = Base Value + GST Amount
Quick Check: ₹10,000 + 18% = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800
Used when consumer pricing or invoices already include GST and you need the net taxable value for accounting.
Taxable Value = Inclusive Total × 100 / (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Inclusive Total − Taxable Value
Quick Check: ₹11,800 with 18% GST = ₹11,800 × 100 / 118 = ₹10,000 Base
Tax Ledger Allocation: Intra-State vs. Inter-State
Tax splits 50/50 between CGST (Central Government) and SGST / UTGST (State / UT Government). For an 18% rate, 9% goes to CGST and 9% to SGST.
The full 18% is levied as IGST (Integrated GST), collected centrally and distributed through inter-governmental settlement under the IGST Act.
Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to common taxpayer confusion points, reform changes, and invoicing edge cases.
Under the GST 2.0 rationalization effective from September 2025, the GST Council eliminated the intermediate 12% and 28% tax slabs to streamline India’s indirect tax structure. Items previously taxed at 12% were largely reclassified into either the 5% essentials slab or the standard 18% slab. Goods formerly in the 28% slab were moved primarily to 18%, while luxury and de-merit goods (such as tobacco, pan masala, and high-end automobiles) had their former Compensation Cess merged into a unified 40% slab. The current simplified system comprises four primary tiers: 0% (Nil), 5%, 18%, and 40%.
